FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Why hire a tutor?

A tutor provides what crowded classrooms can't: personalized attention, the freedom to ask any question, and teaching at your pace. The right tutor doesn't just help with homework — they reveal the fundamental connections that make maths make sense. When students grasp these underlying patterns, exam questions transform from intimidating puzzles into straightforward solutions. Whether you're aiming to improve grades, reduce exam stress, or secure a place at your dream university, 1-on-1 tutoring is one of the highest-return investments you can make in your life.

How is tutoring different from learning in school?

Schools face practical limitations: 30 students per class, strict syllabuses, and limited time. Teachers can't always explain the fundamental connections that make everything click—not because they don't want to, but because they simply don't have the time. In 1-on-1 tutoring: Questions get answered properly, not rushed There's no embarrassment about asking for clarification I can spend extra time on topics that are holding you back I've identified the key concepts, common mistakes, and exam patterns for each syllabus The result? Deeper understanding in less time, and the confidence to tackle any exam question.

How does online maths tutoring work?

All sessions take place online via Zoom or Microsoft Teams. Since 2020 I've taught exclusively online with excellent results - students often focus better at home without the stress of travel, and parents appreciate the flexibility. Sessions work exactly like in-person tutoring: we share screens, work through problems together, and I can annotate in real time. It's just as effective as sitting in the same room - often more so.

What does the free introductory call involve?

The free 15-minute call is a no-pressure conversation where we: Discuss your child's current situation and goals Talk about scheduling (day, time, frequency) Confirm exam board and specific topics Determine if we're a good fit No sales pitch, just an honest conversation about how I can help.

How do I book a session?

Three ways to get started: Fill in the contact form on the homepage (I respond within 24 hours) Email: tutor@mathsready.org Whatsapp: +447933050111 I'll arrange your free consultation call at a time that suits you.

What can I expect from the sessions?

First session: I'll assess your current understanding using targeted questions that reveal gaps in foundational concepts. Ongoing sessions include: Teaching the fundamental connections between topics Working through past paper questions strategically Identifying and fixing common mistakes Building exam technique and confidence Every session is tailored to what you need most. Bring your own questions or follow my structured approach—both work

Can I change the date / time of my session if something urgent comes up?

Sessions are booked in minimum blocks of 5. I allow 1 session in each block of 5 to be rebooked free of charge. Emergencies will be considered / approved on an individual basis.

Can I bring my own questions to the session or do you follow a strict plan?

Absolutely — I encourage it. Sessions work best when we focus on what you're struggling with most. Bring homework questions, past papers, or topics from class that didn't make sense. The session is yours.

Can I add in additional sessions closer to exam time?

Yes. I open additional slots during exam season to accommodate last-minute cramming or pre-exam confidence boosters. Just ask — I'll do my best to fit you in, especially if you're an existing student.

Can I ask you questions outside of my session?

Yes. I understand that access to extra support at a stressful time can be a game changer. Just ask, and I'll do everything I can to book you in. I always open additional slots during this period and, if I think it would help, I'll suggest it.

Do I need a GCSE maths tutor near me, or is online tutoring just as good?

This is one of the most common questions I hear, and it's a fair one. The instinct to find someone local makes sense - but in practice, online GCSE maths tutoring is just as effective as in-person, and often more convenient. There's no travel time, sessions can fit around school schedules more easily, and students tend to be more relaxed in their own environment. I work with families across the UK - from Windsor and Cambridge to Guildford and Chelmsford - and the results are consistently strong regardless of location.

How quickly can my child improve their GCSE maths grade?

It depends on where they're starting from and how many sessions they do, but most students see meaningful improvement within 6-10 sessions once the right foundation gaps are identified. Students who commit to a 10-session block typically improve by 2 or more grade levels over a term. One of my recent students went from a Grade 2 to a Grade 5 in less than a year. The key is addressing the underlying gaps rather than just practising past papers - the latter can only take you so far without the foundations in place.

Which exam boards do you cover for GCSE and A-Level maths?

I cover all major UK exam boards: AQA, Edexcel and OCR for both GCSE and A-Level maths. If you're unsure which board your child's school uses, you can usually find it on any past paper or by asking their maths teacher. Just let me know when you get in touch and I'll confirm I have the right materials.

My child is really struggling - is it too late to catch up?

No - and I'd push back on the idea that any student is too far behind. In my experience, students who seem to be struggling most are usually missing a small number of foundational concepts that, once addressed, unlock a much larger part of the syllabus. I've worked with students who felt completely lost and within a few months were approaching exam questions with genuine confidence. The earlier we start the better, but it's rarely as hopeless as it feels.

Do you offer Physics tutoring as well as Maths?

Yes - I offer Physics tutoring at GCSE and A-Level alongside my maths sessions. My degree is in Physics with Mathematics from the University of Southampton, so I'm well placed to support students across both subjects. Many of my students take both, which works well since the subjects overlap significantly at A-Level. Just mention it when you get in touch.
